Travel report on my visit to Nwanaju Farms LTD in Nigeria in January 2025

In January 2025, I had the opportunity to visit Nwanaju Farms LTD in Nigeria. This farm offers women, especially widows, the opportunity to earn their own income and thus support their families. In a region where many women are left to fend for themselves, the farm creates a much-needed economic opportunity.

My video about farm work and cassava production in Nigeria!

From harvest to finished product – the processing of cassava

Processing begins with harvesting the cassava roots. Using long knives, the women dig up the roots and collect them in large sacks. Despite the hard physical labor, they perform this task with impressive stamina and skill.

Manual labor as an opportunity for economic independence

The farm primarily processes cassava, one of Nigeria's most important food sources. Many steps could be done by machine, but the farm deliberately relies on manual labor. This creates jobs, secures income, and gives women an active role in the production chain.

After harvesting, the roots are transported to the farm, where they are carefully peeled by hand. They are then crushed by machine before the pulp is filled into bags and drained of excess liquid using simple presses. These mechanical presses are often improvised constructions using heavy stones and hydraulic jacks.

After the pressing process, the dried mass is roasted on large, hot metal plates. This work requires experience, as the heat is intense and the mass must be constantly turned. But with routine and teamwork, the women master this challenge.

Finally, the finished garri, which consists of the roasted cassava pulp, is packaged in small bags and prepared for sale. The product is sold on both the local and international markets, thus securing the economic basis for the women on the farm.

More than a farm – A path to the future

Nwanaju Farms LTD. is far more than just a farm. It offers women a real opportunity for independence and economic security. For many, working on the farm not only provides an income, but also a new perspective and a stronger position within their community.

My visit was a powerful experience. I was able to accompany the women in their daily work, hear their stories, and document how important this initiative is to their lives. The pictures I took show the hard work, but also the pride and hope of these women.

I hope that my documentary raises awareness of the important work of Nwanaju Farms LTD. and inspires more people to support these women—whether by purchasing their products or making donations. Sustainable projects like these demonstrate that economic independence and social progress can go hand in hand.
