Nigeria 2023–2025 – Images of a lived humanity

For the third time, I was able to accompany a medical aid team from Austria to the Madonna Austrian Hospital in southern Nigeria.

The mission was organized by Pastor Emeka Emekearoha from Obergrafendorf (more at www.emeka.at ).

The team consisted of an ophthalmologist , a surgeon , a general practitioner , an optician , an aromatherapist and many dedicated helpers .

Numerous operations, eye treatments, ultrasound examinations and therapeutic measures were carried out free of charge for people in need.

With my camera I documented these touching moments of hope, healing and humanity.

Glasses project

Video glasses project

A central component of the assistance was the distribution of glasses to people with vision problems . The images impressively document the dedication of the Austrian master opticians. An elderly woman smiles as she holds her examination form up to the camera – for her, it's more than just paper; it's the key to better vision and greater independence.

Other images demonstrate how precisely and professionally the eye tests were conducted: Whether using computer-assisted devices, traditional eye charts, or individual lens fitting – every detail was taken into account. In a separate room, the right glasses were selected from a vast inventory and fitted. This logistical feat would not have been possible without the team of helpers working tirelessly in the background!

Help that makes a visible difference - ophthalmological intervention in Nigeria!

Video ophthalmologists

I have already accompanied a team of Austrian ophthalmologists from the Vision Without Borders association to the Madonna Austrian Hospital in southern Nigeria three times. Many people were already eagerly awaiting medical help there—especially free cataract surgery .

The dedicated team performed numerous procedures and helped many patients gain a new, clear perspective on the world. The images capture striking moments of concentration, care, and deep gratitude.

This mission not only gave sight, but also dignity and hope – and serves as a reminder of how much international aid can achieve when provided with heart and competence.

Ultrasound examinations – insights that save lives!

Video ultrasound!

As part of the medical aid mission in January 2025, a fully functional ultrasound machine that was no longer needed in Austria was brought to the Madonna Austrian Hospital in southern Nigeria. This modern device now enables targeted and in-depth diagnostics on-site for the first time – a major advance for medical care for the population.

Expert personnel from Austria also traveled with the device to train the Nigerian doctors . This ensured that the new equipment could not only be used but also used sustainably.

During the operation, numerous ultrasound examinations were performed – many patients received a precise diagnosis for the first time in their lives.

The images show more than just medical technology: they document trust, humanity and practical international cooperation – help that lasts.

Aromatherapy – gentle help with great effect!

A special element of the humanitarian aid mission in January 2025 was the use of aromatherapy . An Austrian aromatherapist accompanied the team and lovingly offered treatments with essential oils – a gentle yet effective way to alleviate symptoms, stabilize mental well-being, and promote relaxation.

The essential oils used for the therapy were donated in Austria and carefully selected to meet the needs of the patients in Nigeria. The precious oils were brought back and used specifically on-site – for example, to support pain relief, promote sleep, or provide stabilization after stressful experiences.

The images depict touching moments of peace and closeness – treatments that touch not only the body but also the soul . In an environment often characterized by difficult living conditions, aromatherapy has given many people brief moments of breathing space, relaxation, and inner peace.
